Curatorial Essay & Exhibition Concept
'Freedom to Form: Baroda Modern' is an authoritative historical exhibition organized by DAG, examining the revolutionary pedagogical and artistic movement that emerged from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda. Led by titans including K.G. Subramanyan, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Bhupen Khakhar, Jyoti Bhatt, and Jeram Patel, the Baroda School radically redefined Indian modernism by weaving together indigenous folk idioms, high Renaissance narrative, miniature traditions, and social satire.
Featuring landmark paintings, terracotta reliefs, and graphic works created between the 1960s and 1990s, the exhibition traces how Baroda became the epicenter of narrative figuration, rejecting Western academic constraints to construct an authentic, multifaceted visual language for post-independence India.
