'Satish Gujral: The Modernist Returns' is a monumental centenary retrospective celebrating the life and genius of Satish Gujral (1925–2020), one of modern India's true Renaissance visionaries. Hosted at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai, in historic Sir Cowasji Jehangir Public Hall, the exhibition is curated by Pramod KG in close collaboration with the Gujral Foundation.
Spanning seven decades of relentless creative innovation, the retrospective showcases Gujral's harrowing early Partition paintings, his world-renowned pioneering burnt-wood relief sculptures, monumental bronzes, ceramic murals, and architectural maquettes (including his internationally acclaimed design for the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi). Overcoming the loss of his hearing in early childhood, Gujral’s fierce, tactile modernist vocabulary remains a towering landmark of 20th-century global art.
