Curatorial Essay & Exhibition Concept
Marking artist Kalpana Shah’s much-anticipated return to Tao Art Gallery after eleven years, 'The Shapes of Elsewhere' is an expansive solo exhibition curated by French curator Arnaud Morand. Organized into three thematic chapters, the exhibition features monumental canvases and sculptural installations that investigate spatial memory, displacement, and how human consciousness continues to inhabit spaces long after leaving them.
Drawing inspiration from philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s seminal text *The Poetics of Space*, Shah's practice is built upon a meditative pictorial vocabulary of repeated geometric incisions, folded papers, and patient accumulations of pigment. The works invite the viewer to explore the inner sanctuaries of memory, showing that the most enduring architectures are those built within the imagination.
